Dry eye in Sydney: what the local environment does to your eyes

Sydney sits in a humid-subtropical, coastal climate, but the day-to-day driver of dry eye here is indoor air, not the weather outside. CBD offices run air-conditioning year-round, commutes and desk work mean long screen-heavy stretches with a reduced blink rate, and easterly sea breezes carry salt and pollen. Humid summers do little to help when so much of the day is spent in conditioned, dried-out indoor air: a classic evaporative-dry-eye combination.

How to choose the best dry eye clinic in Sydney

No directory can tell you which clinic is objectively "the best": the right clinic is the one that correctly works out what is driving your dry eye and treats that, rather than handing you another bottle of drops. Use these criteria when you compare Sydney clinics:

• A thorough assessment, not a quick look. The clinic should image your oil glands (meibography), measure how fast your tear film breaks up, and take time to discuss your symptoms, not glance at your eyes and prescribe drops.
• They treat the cause, not just the symptom. Dry eye is usually evaporative (oil-gland driven), aqueous-deficient (low tear volume), or both. Ask how they'll tell which one you have before recommending a treatment.
• The treatments you may need are available. If your dry eye is evaporative, in-house options like IPL and meibomian gland expression matter. Ask what a full course looks like and how they decide when it's warranted.
• Honest, staged expectations. A good clinic reassesses before selling you a package, talks in terms of managing dry eye rather than curing it, and is upfront that results vary between people.
• Time and follow-up. Longer appointments and a review built into the plan beat a rushed visit. Ask how long a first appointment runs and what follow-up is included.

Areas we can and can't reach from Sydney

Sydney is a wide city and four listed clinics do not cover it evenly. Here is where our listings actually sit relative to the parts of Sydney people search from, including the areas where the nearest listed clinic is a genuine trip rather than a local appointment.

• Lower North Shore and the north. Chatswood is the listed clinic for this side of the harbour, and it is the easiest of our Sydney listings to reach on the North Shore rail line.
• Inner West. Burwood, on Railway Parade, is the nearest listed clinic for the Inner West and the corridor running out along the western line.
• Sutherland Shire and the south. Miranda covers the Shire. For Rockdale, Kogarah and the wider St George area it is usually the closest listed option, with Burwood the alternative to the north.
• Parramatta and the greater west. The Parramatta clinic sits in the middle of Sydney's western half and is the nearest listing for Blacktown, the Hills and, further out, Penrith.
• South-west Sydney: Liverpool, Cabramatta, Canley Heights, Bossley Park and Wetherill Park. We have no listed clinic in the south-west. Parramatta is the nearest, roughly 15 to 20 km north of the Liverpool and Cabramatta area, and traffic on that run is the real cost rather than the distance. This is a gap in the directory, not a routing preference.
• Eastern suburbs and the CBD. No listed clinic sits in the eastern suburbs. Chatswood over the bridge and Burwood to the west are the closest listings. Plenty of general optometrists in the east do dry eye assessments, so the criteria above are worth using locally.
