Scleral lenses are large, rigid, gas-permeable contact lenses designed to vault over the entire cornea and rest on the white of the eye (the sclera). The gap between the lens and the cornea holds a reservoir of saline, effectively bathing the eye surface throughout the day.
Fitting is more involved than standard contact lenses and usually requires specialised imaging and several fitting visits to get the fit and vault right. Once fitted, most wearers find them comfortable for extended wear, though the insertion and removal technique takes practice.
They're typically reserved for more significant or treatment-resistant dry eye, and for irregular corneas where standard lenses don't sit well. A clinician experienced in scleral fitting will usually be involved, and ongoing check-ups are part of getting the fit right.
